An extended warranty is worth buying when three things are true: the product is expensive to repair, it is likely to develop an internal fault after the brand warranty ends, and you plan to keep it longer than that warranty. It is usually not worth it when the brand already gives a long warranty on the costly part, when your real worry is a cracked screen or a spilled drink (an extended warranty does not cover that), or when you replace the product every two or three years.
The add-on shows up at checkout on almost every phone, laptop, TV and appliance in India, often as a one-tap tick box. Here is how to decide in a minute instead of guessing.
What an extended warranty actually covers
An extended warranty continues the manufacturer's warranty for internal, functional faults: a motherboard that dies, a TV panel that shows lines, a washing machine motor that stops. It does not turn into accident insurance.
The terms of the big sellers' plans are consistent on this:
- Flipkart's laptop extended warranty, run by Jeeves, starts "the date after the expiry of the Manufacturer's Warranty" and covers repair or replacement with genuine parts and home service. It excludes liquid spillage, physical and cosmetic damage, wear and tear, batteries and chargers, software problems and commercial use (Flipkart Protect terms).
- Flipkart's mobile extended warranty gives 12 months after the brand warranty, only for new phones, and treats the battery as an excluded accessory. Screen problems are covered only when a manufacturing defect stops the display working, not scratches or cracks (Jeeves mobile terms).
- Vijay Sales VS+, powered by OnsiteGo, covers "organic" internal faults on phones, laptops, TVs, ACs, fridges, washing machines and more, and lists physical damage, liquid damage and power surges as outside its scope (Zoutons summary of the VS+ FAQ).
- Insurer-backed plans such as Bajaj General's extended warranty insurance follow the same pattern: breakdown from manufacturing defects is covered, while physical or liquid damage, theft, consumables and commercial use are not (Bajaj General).
If what you fear is a drop or a spill, look at an accidental and liquid damage plan instead. That is a different product with different exclusions.
The fine print that decides your claim
Two plans with the same "+2 years" label can pay out very differently. These are the lines worth reading before you pay.
| What to check | Why it matters | Example from published terms |
|---|---|---|
| Cover amount | Some plans cap repairs below the price you paid | Flipkart laptop EW: 80% of purchase price in year one, 70% in year two |
| Base price | Bank discounts can lower the cover base | Flipkart mobile EW: 75% of invoice price, excluding card or bank discounts |
| Claim deadline | Late reporting can void a claim | Flipkart mobile EW: report within 3 days, send documents within 5 days |
| Replacement rule | A replacement can end the plan | Flipkart laptop EW: choosing replacement uses up the sum assured and ends cover |
| Who services it | The plan company, not the brand, may run repairs | VS+ is run by OnsiteGo; Flipkart plans by Jeeves |
| Cancellation | Refund windows are short | VS+: refund within 30 days if no service request was raised |
Two more points are easy to miss. First, when a repair costs more than the remaining cover, you pay the difference: Flipkart's laptop terms call it a "Part Payment". Second, the serial number or IMEI on your invoice must match the device. Flipkart's mobile terms void the plan if a mismatch is not corrected within 10 days of activation.
When an extended warranty is worth it
Laptops you will keep four or five years. A failed motherboard or display out of warranty is one of the costliest consumer repairs, and laptops are kept long. A plan that adds one or two years of internal-fault cover is often the most sensible use of this add-on, as long as you accept that the battery and charger are excluded. If you are choosing a machine, our laptop deals list the warranty the store states on each listing.
Large TVs. A panel or mainboard fault is expensive, and TVs are typically kept many years. Check that the plan covers the panel (some brand plans add panel cover only on an upgraded tier) and that service is at home.
Front-load washing machines and inverter fridges without long full warranties. Many brands give 10 years or more on the compressor or motor, but only one or two years on everything else: the control board, pump, sensors and door lock. An extended warranty fills that gap. Business Standard reported in August 2024 that brands such as LG, Samsung, Haier and Godrej compete on compressor warranties of up to 10 years and motor warranties of up to 20 years, while full product warranties remain short (Business Standard).
When the plan is from a brand with good local service. Brand plans such as Samsung Care+ (now offered on fridges, washing machines, ACs, microwaves and TVs, in 1- to 4-year terms) are serviced through the brand's own network (FoneArena). Retailer plans can be good too, but check who actually repairs the product in your city.
When to skip it
The costly part already has a long warranty. If your AC or fridge comes with a 10-year compressor warranty, an extended warranty mostly buys cover for smaller parts. Bajaj General's own terms exclude components still under an extended manufacturer warranty, so you are not paying twice for the compressor anyway. Do note that long component warranties may not include everything: Samsung's 10-year compressor and motor warranty, for example, excludes labour costs (Samsung India Newsroom).
Phones you upgrade every two to three years. Most phone failures people pay for are cracked screens, water damage and tired batteries, and the mobile extended warranty excludes all three. If you sell your phone before the plan even starts, it adds nothing. An accidental damage plan or simply a good case is the better spend.
Cheap products. For a ₹1,500 trimmer or a pair of budget earbuds, the plan's cost is a large share of the price and a replacement is not much more.
Used, refurbished or open-box items. Many plans cover only new products bought in India. Flipkart's mobile plan explicitly excludes refurbished and used phones. Our guide on open box, refurbished and renewed products covers what warranty those items usually carry.
Quick decision by product
| Product | Usually worth it? | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop (kept 4+ years) | Often yes | Cover amount, battery excluded, home pickup |
| Large smart TV | Often yes | Panel covered, on-site service |
| Front-load washing machine | Sometimes | Motor warranty vs board and pump cover |
| Inverter AC or fridge | Sometimes | Compressor warranty length, gas and labour terms |
| Smartphone | Usually no | Accidental damage cover is what most people need |
| Small appliances, earbuds | Usually no | Plan cost vs replacement price |
Checklist before you tick the box
- Note the brand warranty first: full product and any longer component warranty. It is on the store listing and the brand's site.
- Read who provides the plan and download its terms. The provider, not the store, handles claims.
- Check the cover amount and whether it falls each year.
- Check exclusions for the parts most likely to fail on that product.
- Keep the invoice and plan certificate together, and check the serial number or IMEI matches.
- Diary the plan's start date (usually the day after brand warranty ends) and its claim deadline.
Also compare the total. Spreading the plan over no-cost EMI can hide what it really costs, and a sale price is only a good deal if it holds up against price history.
If a claim is rejected
Ask for the rejection reason in writing and match it against the plan's own terms. If the provider does not resolve it, you can register a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline by calling 1915, on WhatsApp or SMS at 8800001915, by email, through the NCH or Umang app, or on consumerhelpline.gov.in, according to the Press Information Bureau. Consumer commissions are the next step if that fails.
Frequently asked questions
Does an extended warranty cover a broken phone screen?
No, not when the screen is cracked by a drop. Extended warranties cover manufacturing defects. Flipkart's mobile plan covers the screen only when a manufacturing defect stops it working, such as lines or no display. For drops and spills you need an accidental damage plan.
When does an extended warranty start?
Usually the day after the manufacturer's warranty ends. Flipkart's laptop and mobile plans both start then, so the plan does nothing during the first year if the brand warranty is one year.
Can I buy an extended warranty later, after purchase?
Some providers allow it while the brand warranty is still valid. Bajaj General, for example, sells cover any time before the manufacturer's warranty expires, with no premium loading within 180 days of the invoice. Store plans are usually offered only at checkout, so check before you order.
Is a brand plan better than a store plan?
Not automatically. A brand plan uses the brand's service network and genuine parts; a store plan may be run by a third party such as Jeeves or OnsiteGo. Compare the cover amount, exclusions and who repairs the product in your city.
Does the extended warranty transfer if I sell the product?
Often not. Bajaj General's terms say cover does not pass to a new owner, and Flipkart's mobile plan can be cancelled on resale. Check the transfer clause if you plan to sell.
