Open box, refurbished or renewed products can save you real money, but the labels are not interchangeable. The short answer: open box usually means a returned or display unit that is close to new, refurbished means a used or faulty unit that has been repaired and tested, and renewed is a store's own name for its refurbished programme. What decides whether the deal is good is not the label but three things on the listing: who gives the warranty, how long you have to return it, and how far below the current new price it is.
This guide explains each label, what Indian marketplaces typically offer, and the checks to do the day the parcel arrives.
What each label usually means
There is no single legal definition of these terms in Indian e-commerce, so each store and seller uses them slightly differently. Read the listing's condition note rather than trusting the badge.
| Label | What it usually is | Typical warranty | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open box / unboxed | Returned, display or transit-damaged-box stock, often barely used | Brand warranty may remain, sometimes from the original sale date | Missing accessories, shorter remaining warranty |
| Refurbished (brand) | Repaired by the manufacturer or its authorised partner | Brand's own refurb warranty | Limited stock, repair-only terms |
| Refurbished / renewed (seller) | Used or faulty unit repaired and tested by a seller on a marketplace | Seller warranty, not the brand's | Quality depends on the seller |
| Used / pre-owned | Sold as-is by a person or reseller | Often none | No inspection, possible stolen or locked device |
US consumer site ConsumerAffairs describes open box as a "basically new return" and renewed as a store programme whose warranty comes from that programme rather than the manufacturer (ConsumerAffairs, October 2025). The same pattern holds on Indian sites.
Who backs the warranty matters more than the badge
This is the single most important line on a refurbished listing.
- Store or seller warranty. Amazon says products in its Renewed programme in India are inspected by qualified suppliers and backed by a seller warranty of at least six months, during which a defective product is repaired, replaced or refunded (About Amazon India, 2021). Note that this is the seller's promise, so claims go through the seller, not a brand service centre.
- Brand refurbished warranty. When Samsung ran a refurbished phone and tablet sale on its Indian store, the terms gave a limited six-month warranty for repairs only, no refund or replacement even for a dead-on-arrival unit, and no cover for cosmetic marks (Samsung India terms, July 2020). Brand-backed does not automatically mean generous.
- Remaining brand warranty on open box. Some open-box units still carry the manufacturer's warranty, but it may be counted from the first sale date, not from your purchase. Ask, or check the serial number on the brand's warranty page after delivery.
Before paying, write down three things from the listing: who gives the warranty, how long it lasts, and whether the remedy is repair, replacement or refund.
Return windows are short and often replacement-only
Refurbished items rarely get the easy returns of new products. A September 2026 summary of Flipkart's category rules lists refurbished items under a 7-day, replacement-only window (Zoutons, September 2026). Policies change and can differ by seller, so treat that as a reason to check the "Return policy" line on the exact listing before you order.
In practice this means you have about a week to find any problem. Plan to do the checks below on the day of delivery, not the following weekend.
Your rights help here. India's Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, in force since 23 July 2020, require e-commerce entities to show information on return, refund, exchange, warranty and guarantee, along with the seller's name, address and grievance officer contact (Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan summary). If a listing hides these details, that alone is a reason to skip it.
Is the discount actually worth it?
A refurbished price only looks cheap next to the launch price. Compare it with two numbers instead:
- The current price of the same model new. Phones and laptops often get cheaper within months of launch, and older reviews from Digit noted refurbished discounts quoted against launch prices rather than today's price. Check the new model's price on our smartphone deals or laptop deals, and use the price tracker to see whether a new unit's current price is normal or briefly higher.
- A newer, cheaper model bought new. A two-year-old flagship refurbished for the same money as a current mid-range phone may give a better camera but fewer remaining software updates and an older battery. Our smartphone buying guide explains how to check update support.
If the gap to a new unit with full brand warranty and normal returns is small, buy new. The saving needs to pay for the shorter warranty and the risk.
What to check the day it arrives
Do these before the return window closes, ideally while recording an unboxing video in case you need to raise a complaint.
- IMEI match (phones). Dial
*#06#and match the IMEI with the box and invoice, as Business Today recommends. - Government IMEI check. The Department of Telecommunications advises sending
KYM <IMEI>by SMS to 14422, or using the Sanchar Saathi portal or app, to confirm the brand and model registered to that IMEI (FoneArena on the DoT advisory, November 2025). - Battery. On an iPhone, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health to see maximum capacity (Smartprix explainer). On Android and laptops, check whatever battery or health readout the brand provides and watch how fast it drains in a normal day.
- Screen and body. Look for dead pixels, faint ghost images, lifted glass and dents that the condition note did not mention.
- Every port and radio. Charge with the supplied cable, test both SIM slots, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, speakers, microphones and all cameras. On a laptop, test the keyboard, trackpad, webcam and every USB port.
- Accessories. Confirm the charger and cable are included if the listing says so, and that they are the brand's own.
- Account locks. Make sure no previous Google, Apple or Microsoft account is signed in or blocking a reset.
- Software. Confirm it updates normally and that the storage and RAM shown in settings match the listing.
If anything fails, raise the return or replacement request with photos straight away rather than waiting for the seller to call back.
What is safer, and what to think twice about
Our view, based on how warranties and returns work: phones, laptops, tablets and headphones are the most common refurbished buys because faults show up quickly and are easy to test at home. Be more careful with items where problems appear slowly or need installation, such as large appliances, and with anything where the battery is the main part of the product, such as power banks and smartwatches. For appliances, also check that the energy and safety labels are genuine; our explainer on BIS, ISI and star labels covers what to look for.
For a phone or laptop, a fair rule is: buy refurbished only from a seller that gives at least six months' written warranty, shows its address and grievance contact, and offers a return or replacement window long enough for you to run the checks above.
Frequently asked questions
Is open box better than refurbished?
Usually, yes. Open-box units are typically returned or display stock with little use, while refurbished units have been used or faulty and repaired. Check whether the open-box unit still carries brand warranty and from which date.
Does Amazon Renewed come with a warranty in India?
Amazon says Renewed products in India come with a seller-backed warranty of at least six months. Claims go through the seller, so read the listing's warranty terms before buying.
Can I return a refurbished phone bought online?
Often only within a short window and only for a replacement. A September 2026 summary of Flipkart's rules lists 7-day replacement for refurbished items. Check the return line on the exact listing, because it can differ by seller.
How do I check if a refurbished phone is genuine?
Match the IMEI from 06 with the box and invoice, then send KYM <IMEI to 14422 or use the Sanchar Saathi app to see the registered brand and model. Also check that storage and RAM in settings match the listing.
How much cheaper should a refurbished product be?
There is no fixed rule. Compare it with today's price for the same model new, not the launch price, and with a newer model at the same budget. If the saving is small, a new unit with full warranty is the safer buy.
