Is a 4K TV worth it? For most Indian homes buying a 43-inch or bigger TV, yes — but not because you will watch a lot of 4K. You will mostly watch HD channels and streamed video that the TV upscales. The real reasons are that 4K is now the normal resolution at 43 inches and above, and that the picture you do get in 4K (cricket on some services, Netflix originals, YouTube) needs a matching plan and a steady internet connection. At 32 inches, 4K hardly matters.
Here is how to decide, based on what you actually watch.
What 4K, Full HD and HD Ready mean on a TV listing
Resolution is the number of pixels on the panel. Indian listings use three labels:
| Label on the listing | Pixels | Where you usually see it |
|---|---|---|
| HD Ready | about 1366 × 768 | 32-inch TVs |
| Full HD | 1920 × 1080 | 40–43-inch budget TVs |
| 4K Ultra HD (UHD) | 3840 × 2160 | most 43-inch and almost all 50-inch+ TVs |
You can see this pattern on our smart TV deals page: the 32-inch listings are HD Ready, a few 40–43-inch models are Full HD, and 43-inch, 50-inch, 55-inch and larger models are listed as 4K Ultra HD — for example, the Thomson FA Series 32-inch is listed as HD Ready, the Thomson Alpha 40-inch QLED as Full HD, and the TCL C6KS 55-inch as Ultra HD (4K). LG lists its 43-inch NU87 as "4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160)".
More pixels only help when the screen is big enough, or you sit close enough, to see them. On a 32-inch screen viewed from across a room, the difference between Full HD and 4K is very hard to notice. On a 55-inch screen it becomes easier to see, especially with sharp 4K video.
If you mostly watch DTH channels
Most satellite (DTH) channels in India are broadcast in standard definition or HD, not 4K. A 4K TV shows them by upscaling — stretching the lower-resolution picture over its 4K panel and filling in detail. How good that looks depends on the TV's picture processor, not on the "4K" label.
DTH 4K does exist, but it is limited. Tata Play (formerly Tata Sky) was the first Indian DTH operator to offer 4K set-top boxes, in January 2015, and its Binge+ Android set-top box supports 4K channels, according to Wikipedia's Tata Play entry, which lists one UHD channel. In March 2024 Tata Play launched a paid add-on called Tata Play 4K with Disney Star, starting with IPL matches, as TelecomTalk reported. To get 4K from DTH you need a 4K-capable box and the add-on as well as a 4K TV. Check what your operator offers today before you count on it.
What this means for you: if 90% of your viewing is DTH news, serials and regional channels, a 4K TV will not make those channels 4K. Choose a TV with good upscaling and a size that suits your room, and do not pay extra just for the 4K label.
If you mostly stream Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar or YouTube
This is where a 4K TV earns its place — if three things line up:
- The title is available in 4K. Many big OTT originals and films are. Older shows and most regional TV content are not.
- Your plan includes 4K. Netflix streams Ultra HD only on its Premium plan. Other apps also limit 4K by plan or by title, so check the plan page in the app before paying more.
- Your internet can sustain it. Netflix recommends 15 Mbps or higher for 4K (UHD), against 5 Mbps for Full HD and 3 Mbps for HD. The ISP Hathway is more cautious: its blog says 4K "demands at least 25 Mbps" and suggests a plan of at least 100 Mbps if you watch 4K often, because other devices at home share the same line.
The word that matters is sustained. A 100 Mbps fibre plan that drops in the evening, or a TV far from the Wi-Fi router, will fall back to Full HD automatically. If your TV is in a different room from the router, a wired LAN cable or a better router helps more than a bigger TV. Our Wi-Fi router picks cover that side.
Mobile hotspot or a slow DSL line? Then most of your streaming will play in HD or Full HD anyway, and a 4K TV mainly gives you better upscaling.
The screen-size rule that settles most cases
| TV size | Our view |
|---|---|
| 32 inches | 4K rarely matters. HD Ready or Full HD is fine; spend on sound or a good brand. |
| 40–43 inches | Full HD is still acceptable at a normal sofa distance. 4K is worth it if you stream a lot and the price gap is small. |
| 50 inches and above | Buy 4K. Almost every model is 4K, and at this size Full HD looks soft up close. |
These are Deals Basket's editorial suggestions, not a lab test. If you sit very close to the screen, move one row up.
What matters more than "4K" on the box
Two 4K TVs can look very different. Once you have decided on 4K, compare these on the listing:
- Panel and backlight. Mini LED with local dimming and OLED handle dark scenes better than a plain LED panel. QLED usually means wider colour, not better contrast on its own.
- HDR formats. HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision decide how bright highlights look in 4K HDR content. A cheap panel that "supports HDR" but is not very bright will not show much difference.
- Refresh rate. 60 Hz is fine for TV and films. 120 Hz helps fast sport and gaming on a console.
- Processor and OS. These affect upscaling of DTH and YouTube, and how smoothly apps run. Check the update support of the TV's software too.
- Sound. Thin TVs often have weak speakers; budget for a soundbar if dialogue matters. See soundbar deals.

A quick decision checklist
- You watch mostly DTH and the TV is 32 inches → skip 4K.
- You watch mostly DTH and want 43 inches → Full HD or 4K both work; buy on picture processing, brand service and price.
- You stream on a steady 30 Mbps+ connection with a 4K-capable plan → buy 4K, ideally 50 inches or more.
- You play on a PS5 or Xbox Series X → buy 4K with HDMI 2.1 and 120 Hz if your budget allows.
Before you buy during a sale, check whether the "deal" price is really lower than usual on our price tracker. A 4K label is no reason to accept an inflated MRP discount.
Frequently asked questions
Will a 4K TV make my DTH channels look like 4K?
No. Most DTH channels are SD or HD. A 4K TV upscales them, which can look cleaner than on an older TV, but it is not true 4K. You need a 4K set-top box, a 4K service from your operator and 4K content for that.
What internet speed do I need for 4K streaming?
Netflix recommends 15 Mbps or higher for 4K. Leave room for other devices at home: a stable connection of 25–30 Mbps or more, measured at the TV, is safer.
Is a 4K TV worth it at 32 inches?
Rarely. At normal viewing distances you will not see much difference between HD Ready, Full HD and 4K on a 32-inch screen, and few 32-inch models are 4K anyway.
Is Full HD still okay at 43 inches?
Yes, if you mostly watch DTH and sit a normal distance away. Choose 4K if you stream often and the price difference between the two models is small.
Does 4K matter for gaming?
For a PS5 or Xbox Series X, yes: they output 4K. Look for HDMI 2.1 and a 120 Hz panel if you play fast games.
